Haiti - Colonbye / Kolonbye

Haiti - Colonbye / Kolonbye

In Haiti, a 'kolonbye' is an elevated storage house, a Haitian version of a granary that Haitians on the countryside use to store their grains...

Haitians from the countryside of Haiti use what they call a beans 'colonbye' to store their crops (danre) like dried corn, millet, beans, peanuts, and everything else they harvest.

A kolonbye is also where they store the dried seeds to be planted on the next planting season.

Granaries are often built above the ground to keep the stored food away from mice and other animals.

Practice your Haitian Creole :: En province Haiti, peyisan itilize colonbye pou yo store danre (mayi, pitimi, pwa congo, pistach) ak tout lot sa ke yo recolte... Yo sere tou plan yo, ki vle di, grenn pou yo plante nan pwochenn sezon an...

Haiti - Digging a residential wastewater septic system

Haiti - Digging a residential wastewater septic system

Look at this photo... Haiti residential wastewater treatment system - When I decided to install a modern bathroom in my dad's old house, the "Boss" (plumber) made me dig a 16 feet hole in the back yard...

Once the digging is complete, he builds a concrete wall all the way up and covers it with concrete. The bottom is dirt

So basically all the toilet water and bath water goes into that hole. He tells me this type of residential wastewater septic system will almost never fill up... At lease not in my life time

Haiti - BLOCS - Concrete Blocks - Concrete masonry units

Haiti - BLOCS - Concrete Blocks - Concrete masonry units

When it comes to BLOCS -- Concrete Blocks or Concrete masonry units -- in Haiti there are two types: BLOC Vibre, made on a Vibration Block Making Machine, and BLOC a Main , those made by hand. Which one do you use in your construction?

One of the block makers told me it is not the fact that the blocks are made by hands that make them less solid or even dangerous. People just try to yield too much block out of one bag of cement

The average block maker in Haiti produces 40 concrete blocks out of one bag of cement. The block maker told me If you bring the number down to 30, you will get 30 good solid blocks

Weather it is true of false, my cousin swears by the Concrete blocks made on a Vibration Block Making Machine.
